Taboos Undercut Nepal's Marital Rape Law, Women's eNews, 18 January 2012 <http://womensenews.org/story/rape/120117/taboos-undercut-nepals-marital-rape-law> : Many women in Nepal say they didn't know that involuntary intercourse within marriage has been outlawed. Women's advocates say those who are aware would rather call it a form of domestic violence than marital rape.

Zambian Sex Workers Offered 'Transformation', Women's eNews, 16 January 2012 <http://womensenews.org/story/hivaids/120115/zambian-sex-workers-offered-transformation> : A nongovernmental group in Zambia has reached out to 7,000 sex workers since 1992 and has helped many find new occupations. But other women in the impoverished country don't think they can afford to quit. "I do this for my daughter," one says.

New Research Highlights Link Between FGM/C and Mental Disorders, IRIN News, 13 January 2012 <http://www.irinnews.org/report.aspx?reportid=94638> : New data out of Iraq shows what many psychologists suspected though little research has confirmed: Girls who have undergone female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) are more prone to mental disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Sexual Violence in Haiti's Displacement Camps Still 'Rampant' Says New Report, Women News Network, 12 January 2010 <http://womennewsnetwork.net/2012/01/12/sexual-violence-haitis-camps-rampant/> :  In a combined effort to get vital information out to the public covering ongoing conditions for women and girls' safety in Haiti on the second anniversary of the crisis that hit the region causing over 608,000 people to become homeless, human rights advocacy group for women - MADRE - has teamed up with on-the-ground legal experts and women's advocates in Haiti to release a new report, "Struggling to Survive - Sexual Exploitation of Displaced Women and Girls in Port au Prince, Haiti."

U.N. to Probe Missing and Murdered Native Women, Inter Press Service News Agency, 10 January 2012 <http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=106402> : As a United Nations committee initiates an inquiry procedure into the alarming number of missing and murdered Native women across Canada, human rights groups are hoping that an on-the- ground investigation by the international body will finally help stem systematic violence against Native women.

Human rights of Women and Girls at 'Extreme Risk' in Nearly Half The World - Maplecroft Index, European Women's Lobby, 17 November 2011 <http://www.womenlobby.org/spip.php?article2705%5d> : New research into the extent of protection of women and girls has revealed that the risk of human rights abuses, such as sexual violence, discrimination, trafficking and sexual exploitation, are at 'extreme' levels in just over 40% of the 197 countries studied.

The stories from the four provinces vary in tenor with one common strain running through them: treatment of

Scholarship Opportunity: Bloomsbury Colleges PhD Studentships 2012 <http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/study/funding/bloomsbury_phd_studentships.html> .
