II. Sexual violence in the news

New study explores the pathways that lead to jail time for women, Medical News Today, 6 August 2013<http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/264360.php>: How do pathways to jail vary for females who are victims of specific types of trauma? New research published in Psychology of Women Quarterly, a SAGE journal, pinpoints the types of trauma such as caregiver violence, witnessing violence, and intimate partner violence, that lead to specific types of offending later in life and offers explanations based on real experiences.

Underage girls are Egypt's summer rentals, Inter Press Service News Agency, 5 August 2013<http://www.ipsnews.net/2013/08/underage-girls-are-egypts-summer-rentals/>: Each summer, wealthy male tourists from Gulf Arab states flock to Egypt to escape the oppressive heat of the Arabian Peninsula, taking residence at upscale hotels and rented flats in Cairo and Alexandria. Many come with their families and housekeeping staff, spending their days by the pool, shopping, and frequenting cafes and nightclubs. Others come for a more sinister purpose.

New Brazilian law guarantees protocol for rape victims, Inter Press Service News Agency, 2 August 2013<http://www.ipsnews.net/2013/08/new-brazilian-law-guarantees-protocol-for-rape-victims/>: Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff signed a law guaranteeing treatment - including emergency contraception - for rape victims in public hospitals, in spite of strong opposition from religious conservatives who believe it will lead to the decriminalisation of abortion.

In Afghanistan, fathers barter daughters to settle drug debts, The Atlantic, 31 July 2013<http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2013/07/in-afghanistan-fathers-barter-daughters-to-settle-drug-debts/278217/>: Darya was a green-eyed, 12-year-old schoolgirl who enjoyed playing barefoot in the sand. Her childhood was cut short when her drug dealer father sold her to a smuggler 34 years older than her.

Gender and sexual equality remain out of reach, New York Times, 28 July 2013<http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2013/07/28/the-future-of-south-africa/gender-and-sexual-equality-remain-out-of-reach-in-south-africa>: South Africa's 1996 Constitution enshrined equality for women and outlawed discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and might have heralded dramatic social change. In some ways this has happened: the position of women is very much higher than in apartheid days, when in rural areas adult women were legal minors.

As long as Coca Cola sells rape culture victims of rape will choose silence, Irish Daily Mail (via RCNI), 18 July 2013<http://www.rcni.ie/coca-cola-rape-culture.aspx>: Only 30% of 2011 Rape Crisis Centre clients had reported the crime to the Gardaí. Ultimately, this figure should be recognised for what it is, a failure. The majority of survivors of sexual violence crimes choose not to seek justice and reporting one of the most serious violent crimes on our statute books is the exception, not the norm.
