Special SVRI Update: SVRI and Partner Events at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict

1) Launch and panel discussion on "What Works to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls?" Wednesday, 11 June 2014, 16.30 - 18.00, Discussion Room 5:

On Wednesday 11 June 2014, as part of the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict fringe, the UK Department for International Development is hosting a panel together with the South African Medical Research Council, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the International Rescue Committee in collaboration with Womankind Worldwide, to launch DFID's £25 million global research and innovation programme, "What Works to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls?".

The discussion will be chaired by Dr Claudia Garcia-Moreno, Lead Specialist, Gender, Reproductive Rights, Sexual Health and Adolescence, World Health Organization, and will analyse the evidence currently available on what works to prevent violence against women and girls.  Speakers include the Rt. Hon Lynne Featherstone MP, UK Department for International Development, Professor Rachel Jewkes, South African Medical Research Council, Dr. Lori Heise, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Dr Shana Swiss, International Rescue Committee, and Hannah Koroma, WAVES, Sierra Leone. 2) The SVRI has partnered with We Will Speak Out (WWSO) to coordinate the Joint Learning Initiative (JLI): Local and Faith Communities learning hub on sexual and gender based violence. The following SVRI/WWSO/JLI events are planned at the Summit:


·         Event 1:  The role of faith leaders in preventing and responding to sexual violence in conflict settings, Wednesday 11 June 2014, 12:00 - 13:30, Discussion Room 4.

This high level event will be co-hosted with the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and will be chaired by Baroness Warsi (Senior Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Minister for Faith and Communities). The event aims to bring together a wide range of faith leaders and other key stakeholders to discuss the need for enhanced collaboration; the importance of effectively and appropriately responding to survivors of sexual violence; and the need to address social norms and values that perpetuate inequality and give rise to sexual violence in conflict settings.

§  Reverend Nicolas Guerekoyame-Gbangou, Central African Republic

§  Miriam Maluwa, UNAIDS, Malawi/UK
§  Shulamit Ambalu, Rabbi of Kehillah North London (Liberal) and Milton Keynes and District Reform Synagogues, lecturer in Rabbinic Literature, Leo Baeck College, UK

·         Event 2: The holistic role of faith communities working to end sexual violence in the DR Congo, Thursday 12 June 2014, 10:00 - 11:30, Discussion Room 4.

This event is a Q&A focused on the DRC and will highlight the holistic role of faith communities working to end sexual violence by: equipping churches to be a safe space, empowering survivors and engaging men and boys.

§  Dr. Jo Lusi, Founder of HEAL Africa, Goma
§  Thérèse Mema Mapenzi, Listening Rooms in Bukavu
§  Louise Bashige, Ushindi Programme Coordinator, Eastern DR Congo
§  A representative from the DR Congo government - still to be confirmed

·         Event 3: Joint Learning Initiative learning hub on sexual and gender based violence, Friday 13 June, 12:30 - 14:30, Boardroom, Novotel Hotel (opposite ExCel Centre)

This will be the first Joint Learning Initiative (JLI): Local and Faith Communities learning hub on sexual and gender based violence face-to-face meeting. This Hub has members working in conflict settings from across the globe and is looking at the influence and impact of faith and local communities in strengthening community mobilisation and systems in order to achieve holistic health and development for those affected by sexual and gender-based violence. 3) Sonke/Promundo IMAGES event:

Please join Sonke and Promundo today, 10 June at 18:30 in Discussion Room 6 for the launch of the "gender relations, sexual and gender-based violence and the effects of conflict on women and men in North Kivu, Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo - Results of the International Men and Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES)". This event is free and open to the public.
